OT: PlayStation Controller Connector

I've been experimenting with a PlayStation 2 controller with BASIC and
Javelin Stamps and would like to build a little add-on (AppMod) for a BOE-Bot
for
trade show and school demos. What I'm specifically looking for is a third-party

connector (9 pins, female) for the PlayStation controller that is
PC-mountable. My own web search has come up short ... I'm hoping someone in the
group
has an idea.

Sorry for not being able to help you but I am interested in
the same project. Is the PlayStation 2 controller protocol
propietary ? could you please share some links with the
protocol information ?

There's an article in Nuts & Volts this month that shows how to make the
connections. Unfortunately, there is no code with the article, you have to
download it. It's pretty easy, though. For the connections, you have to pull
the
PSX Data Out line high through a 1K resistor, and the clock out from the Stamp
has to be inverted. I connected to an NPN transistor through a 470 ohm
resistor. The clock line to the PSX is pulled high through 4.7 k, pulled low by
the
transistor.

After that, it's just SHIFTOUT and SHIFTIN.

Here's a link that will be useful:

.au/andrewm/psx/psxcont/
</A>

I'm working on a Parallax AppNote for the BASIC Stamp and Javelin since the
PSX controller is very easy to work with -- it just looks like a big shift
register to the Stamp.

Yes, that's the one. I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, but I didn't expect
28 bucks ... guess that screws up my idea of building a PSX-->BOE-Bot
adaptor.

Thanks for the link.

You could get an extension cable for the controller and snip off the end you
need......

Follow-up on my own post ... I found a place in the United States [by
searching on "playstation +repair"] that sells the connectors for $15. They're
not
new though, they've been removed from bad game units.

I will do that for my prototype, but the idea is to build a product (BOE-Bot
AppMod), so cutting wires is not conducive to our production evironment.

There has to be a cheap commercial source, its just that the obvious vendors
want to price their spare parts to keep bubba from attempting his own
repairs.

I'll take my ps2 apart when i get home and see if I can find any numbers to
identify the manufacturer of the
connector but I suspect they are special made for Sony.
