GPS and The Stamp!

I participate in a number of forums that deal with UAV's/RC aircraft
and found that most builders use 'off the shelf' units. At a
minimum, I had hoped to build a 'come home' device, one way point
over the field, so that a push of the button would bring me back. If
you fly RC, you realize how easily one can get away from you. A
couple of guys are building a circuit now to do this, to come up with
something that has moderate cost and the reward of DIY. The inherent
inaccuracy of GPS will not allow too accurate a system, not without
DGPS and other sophisticated gear. I had hoped to learn something
about the 'programming' by going the STAMP routine. I have received,
to date, several programs you guys have sent me. I have-and will-be
spending hours to learn and experiment. It's alot more fun studying
the routines on a project you're interested in than turning LED's on
and off! BTW guys, my former 'employer' sent me some years ago to a
foreign country to help with their war on terrorism. It's amazing
how little they actually have to do to turn a country inside-out!
Don't let them win here! Thanks again for the help I've gotten.
This kinda' fun, tech and politics, wow!

Many years ago, a person showed me an article from some electronic magazine
when the Basic Stamp was in its infancy.
The article described an application for the stamp that would likely be
useful to you and your RC plane, for the situation you descibed, that is, the
plane
"gets away" from you.
The Basic Stamp mounted on the plane would constantly monitor if it was
receiving signals from the RC controller (no idea on the hardware interface for
this....).
If the plane lost contact with the controller, the Basic Stamp would take
over and cause the plane to execute a gentle turn. I imagine that this would
bring the plane back into range where you could then have control over it again.
Don't know anything about flying RC's, but I assume you would put have the
Stamp do the following if contact was lost:
Set flight attitude to "level"
Execute a wide gentle turn (left or right)
Continue to monitor for RC signals received and release control of the plane
back to the RC once signals are again received
This application will not certainly land the plane back to the runway, but it
sounds like it might serve the purpose.....that is to get the plane back
within distance for you to control.
