sonar module weatherproofing question

Hi Folks,

I'm working on an outdoor project that uses the Devantech module, and I need
some advice on outdoor protection. Has anyone come up with a good way to
protect the sensor from weather and vandals? Ideally, I'd put the sucker in
a
sealed box, but then I'd have other problems. I was thinking about a
plastic
film or wire mesh covering apertures in a sealed box, but I've got a feeling
that the sensor would keep seeing those.

Any ideas?

thanks,

d...

    Hi David,

We had ultrasonic condenser microphones outdoors for a bat study.
The microphone was mounted in a piece of PVC tube, facing downward
out the opening to protect it from rain. The tube was sealed at the
top of course. A piece of ceramic tile was mounted at 45 degrees
below the opening to serve as a reflector for sounds coming in from
the side. It worked quite well for that purpose.

The Devantech modules may have trouble with the tube -- I tried doing
something similar with one and it always reported a very short distance, not
the actual object distance. A larger tube may work though.
