I need to be able to detect the shade of some objects and I need to
find out what is the best way to do it. Here is the setup, I need to
sort some nuts (Walnuts) based on there darkness/lightness as they
pass by on a chute. They will be passing by on this chute at a high
rate of speed. Any suggestions would be alot of help.

Hi Chris -
You might want to take a look at the Taos light to frequency chips found here:
http://www.taosinc.com/light_to_frequency.htm
Contacting Taos with your problem might be the best idea. They are familiar
with the capabilities of the Parallax Basic Stamp, and may be able to advise
you.
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Bruce Bates

Chris:
A lot depends on what is "high rate of speed."
Also, if you are attempting to determine e.g. ripeness, an optical
filter to restrict your measurement to some specific area of the
spectrum could improve the discrimination a lot.
As Bruce mentioned, the TAOS chip could work here, depending on what
your actual speed requirements are. Parallax even sells an accessory
board that is ideal for experiments. Using this device, you might be
able to do the "optical filtration" in software, as a ratio between
two colors or some more complicated manipulation of the raw RGB
values.
