SV: [basicstamps] SMS and STAMP

Greetings!
There's no real problem in this but...
1. the Phone must have a DATA cable for it, and must emulate a Modem.
(Most Data-enabled phones with a data connector will fit this
requirement)
2. You need the Data cable, and probably a null-modem adapter to connect
it to the BS2.
(Assumes you're using a development board with a DB9 connector)
3. You need the AT modem command set for your Phone.
(This is the real hurdle)
Not all phone manufacturers believe that 'amateurs' need to know the
command set.
If you told us which phone it is, someone might have the list.
:-)

BTW: There's a lot of SMS software for PC's out there. Some even sold in
'blister-packs' together with the data-cable you need. (Usually in the
phone-accessories racks in the store)

Hi Stampers,
here is a rather strange question: I would like to connect a mobile
phone to a stamp. The stamp is supposed to "read" the contents of any
short message that is sent to that mobile. Does anyone have an idea? Are
there, if it doesn't work with a stamp, any PC-programms that can do
that?
Thanks for any suggestion,
Uli

Personally I have some experience with sending/receiving SMS messages using
scripts on the Nokia 2110(using a Nokia Data card in a PCMCIA adapter pod
connected to my Psion S5).
The 8110 uses the same data card and command set.
I assume that newer Nokia's use the same set, too...
I'm now using a Siemens M50, but haven't tried there.
(It has a data connector, and I have the cabling, but just doesn't SMS often
enough to mess about )
I could try to use the AT commands from the Nokia Datacard manual and see if
they work on that, too.

Hi Trygve,
thanks for quick response!!
Actually it doesn't matter which mobile it is because I am going to buy one
anyways. So if you know how it works with a certain phone, that I can get here
in Germany (don't think there is a big difference to what you have) just let me
know. Best would be a phone that is not too new so that I can get it low price
at ebay or something.
Thanks again very much for your kind help,
Uli

The adapter pod is special... Very special..
It is the size of a cigarette pack, with 4 AA batteries.
It takes Serial type PCMCIA cards and has a serial lead out to connect it to
PDA's.
The plug only fits Psion S3c/S3mx/Siena/S5/S5mx/S7/netBook.
There is an older version, too, but that only works with the Psion S3/S3a (uses
a 1.5Mb/s network instead of RS232)
Somewhat overkill for your purposes, particularly if you don't need to use a
PCMCIA card with your Phone.
Most modern phones only need a Data lead, and the null-modem cable.
(Or just the data cable if you're willing to do a DIY job on it :-)
:-)

Sounds very good but still a bit complicated. What exactly is this adapter-pod?
Can you go more into deatail if possible?
Thanks,
Uli
