Com port configuratin

Where can I get more information about com port configurations? I am
using a lap top that requres an adaptor from a 25 pin to 9 pin
cable. The Basic Stamp Editor shows a connection on COM3 but can't
find the stamp ("No Stamp Found"). Any suggestions on how to trouble
shoot this?

If it is a female-type DB25 (it has sockets)
on the back of the PC then that is a
    parallel printer port.

If it is a male-type DB25 (it has pins)
on the back of the PC, and
you are using an off-the-shelf DB25 to DB9
adapter, then the cable must be straight
    through (no null modem).

    I haven't seen a DB25 Male port on a laptop
in several years -- maybe your's is an old
    one?

Usually the hardware COM port on a laptop
comes out COM1 -- COM3 is typically not used,
and COM2 is typically a modem (if installed).
Personally, I've installed a USB serial
adapter as Com3. Com3 has also been used
as the IR-port, on newer laptops.

If this doesn't answer your questions,
next time tell us the year, model, and
vendor of the laptop, and what you
have your BS2 plugged in to (BOE,
    etc).

Laptops can be such fun to set up because many not only have a serial port,
but also an I/R port and possibly a built-in modem. In a Windows environment
it can be real fun to get it all working. Tell us more about the laptop and
we may be able to assist further.

It may be worth noting that many of the DB25 to DB9 adapters / converters
(not cables) do not work for anything but a mouse. All of the necessary
lines are not passed from one end to the other.

    Pins 3 & 4 on a standard DB9-DB9 and DB25-DB25 cable will be straight
through. On a standard DB25-DB9 cable they will cross. Null cables will be
    just the opposite.

Does the laptop have "FIFO" enabled for the COM port? I use a Toshiba
laptop and, just before I installed the stamp IDE, someone answered a
previous question about having to disable it on a Toshiba to get the
communications with the stamp going. I did the same, and it's worked for
me. On NT, FIFO is an advanced setting for a COM port.

I never tested with FIFO enabled.
