I am looking for some Aluminum stand offs for my robotics project.
Preferably an assortment of varying lengths... Does anyone have a
good source that is reasonably priced???

Mouser and Digikey should have them -- either way they are not cheap if you
want the threaded ones. If you can live with a spacer they come cheaper.

    Hi,
I use the standoffs from Digikey.
I use the . 250 hex size to mount PC Boards. The type with 2 threaded holes
    work best.
I have used the ones with the threaded stud but they snap off too easy.

I get them from Jameco. seems everbody has them.

But, I also use left overs from PC's. when you get a PC board, there
are a few used as motherboard stand-off's.

the cheapest way is to get some 4-40 screws and a spacer. a plastic
    BIC pen body or something.

Not sure what Digikey gets for them, but this seems cheap enough:

One problem -- those are metric thread -- 3mm.

Its much easier (and cheaper) to find inch hardware at most stores. 4-40 and
6-32 are the most common sizes for hobby stuff.

    Yes, that is the risk.
I found that #4-40 hardware is easier to work with.
#4 screws will go through a 1/8 inch hole -- which is
the hole most PC boards seem to come with.

It's easy to mistake for 3mm -- the size is very close,
but the threads are different enough to need tapping.

Radio Shack sells a 3mm kit, which I have used on
occasion just because it has screws and stand-offs
    together.

Depending on what you want to use the spacers for, you need to be aware that
the longer length spacers are not threaded all the way through. This is
usually not a problem until you want to do something different, such using a
long screw through your base and a standoff, then securing the circuit board
with a nut. The same thing applies when you want to cut a standoff to make
    it shorter.

One other thing to consider is some standoffs have a very large diameter
compared to the screw they use. If you get metal standoffs, this can have
some unwanted side effects such a shorting out traces or component leads
near the mounting hole. I smoked a brand new LCD this way. I have seen more
than one manufacturer use the same diameter spacer for 4-40, 6-32 and 8-32.

Our preference is the hex standoffs, because they can be tightened using a
small wrench or nut driver, rather than boogering up the surface with a pair
of pliers. The also look cool.

McMaster-Carr has a good selection, both metric and inch. Also
different materials (ceramic) that you won't find elsewhere --

    About AL Spacers:

The nice thing about Digikey, Jameco, and JDR Microdevices is that they do
not have a minimum order. If you want one they will sell you one. (I think
Digikey may have a $5 fee if it is less than $25.)

Most of the big guys will not even consider it unless your order is $50 or
    more.

Digikey has a good assortment of AL and Nylon spacers. Threaded and just
    hollow.
They also have a kit with assorted spacers. IM at home and do not have a
catalog with me, or I would give you the number. Do a search on 'Kits' You
will find lots of neat parts assortments.
