simple counting using ir beam

hi, i'm a newbie to the whole boe-bot thing. i wanted to know if
there is a way to use the ir beams to count objects? i already have
the boe-bot able to run along a black line and detect objects (and
avoid those objects). i don't want to set up a course where the boe-
bot follows the black line all the way, counting objects left and
right. i want it to be able to move freely and count objects, on or
off the black line...so is there anyway? i tried using the COUNT
command, but can't figure out what to use as the input pin (i know
its the beam detectors, but can't seem to address them properly).
any help is appreciated, thanks.
