Hello,

This summer (July 7-11) Parallax will host the National RoboEducators
"Programming Institute". This presents an opportunity for educators to
come to Parallax and develop a key curriculum.

First, about RoboEducators. RoboEducators operates under a National
Science Foundation grant with the mission of creating a five-module
robotics curriculum for national deployment. You can read about their
group here: http://www.roboeducators.org They've also got a discussion
group.

Our role is to facilitate the development of a generalized
microcontroller programming module in a five-day period. The curriculum
will have five modules covering pneumatics, CAD, etc. The collective
curriculum is intended to be used by teachers to launch students into
building, programming and deploying their own robot for eventual use in
contests (pick your own, there are many).

Our programming module will be built over a five-day period with a group
consisting of our educational staff and five educators with programming
expertise. We need to identify this group relatively quickly so we can
collaborate as much as possible prior to our July meeting. Educators
accepted by the grant administrators will receive a $1,000 stipend for
their trip to Parallax. If this amount is not enough to cover your
expenses Parallax may be able to offer assistance, to be determined on a
case by case basis.

The qualifications for this particular institute are the following:
- you are an educator
- you have robotics experience
- you have expertise in programming, with a Stamp or other commonly
utilized processors in high school education (maybe Mindstorms, MIT
HandyBoard, etc.)

If you would like to be one of the five educators then download and
submit the application from http://www.roboeducators.org. Please inform
us (stampsinclass@p...) that you have made the application so we
can collaborate with the grant administrators (Scott Griffith and Ken
Berry) on behalf of your submittal.

Here are some other reasons to participate during the five-day session
at Parallax:

- salmon/steak BBQ at local R/C airfield; learn to fly an R/C airplane
and see how accelerometers and GPS units can be used to do interesting
things that apply to robotics
- chance to interact with other educators in the same field
- Parallax facility tour; see our many neat BASIC Stamp demonstrations
in the office
- take home another BASIC Stamp for free

We will be helping with hotel arrangements and will provide
breakfast/lunchtime meals. We're really happy to be assisting the
RoboEducators with this task and will do our best to see that their
mission is achieved as defined by their grant.

Sincerely,

Ken Gracey, Parallax
