[[basicstamps] Max232 hook-up]

Here's some info I posted on an Ezboard site about my project using a MAX232.

I got the data sheet from Jameco's web site. It explains what to do; I
printed the page and drew my own circuit; at the time I was trying an
experiment to "condition" RS232 thinking that was my problem with downloading
from my Toshiba laptop but it turned out to be a FIFO problem. Just in the
past few days I modified my design so I can use the MAX232 on the little
circuit board more generically. I changed the wiring for pins 9,10,11,12 to
go to a jumper block. Now, I am using pins 9 and 10 connected to my BS2 and
serial communications works great.

You'll need 5 1uF capacitors; I used tantalum because they are small and
should work well. They are polarized of course, so that's something to be
aware of.

Let me know if this helps or if you have any questions. I can format or
detangle the Ezboard formatting if it's too messy.

Had a major computer crash last week so I'm late getting on this thread.

    MAX232 - 1uF capacitors
    MAX232A - .1uF capacitors
MAX233 - No capacitors (but more expensive)

If you use a lot of MAX232's in breadboarding be sure to look at
http://www.al-williams.com/rs1.htm -- Of course, you can also hardwire
them into projects which a surprising number of people do even in some
    commercial products.
