Axle coupler

Hi. This is only remotely stamp related...but I'm not sure where
else to ask.

Right now I'm working on a home built linear actuator. I've
purchased some stepper motors and a stepper controller that I'll be
controlling with my computer through a bs2. I've run into a problem,
however: The stats on the motors listed their shaft diameters
as .250", however they're actually .275". I'm trying to join these
to a .250" diameter threaded rod. The axle couplers I purchased
don't fit the motor shafts. I tried drilling one of the bores out,
but I botched the attempt and didn't get the enlarged hole dead
center, which causes an eccentric action...

This is a learning project for me, so any suggestions would be
welcome. I've searched mcmaster-carr and sdp-si, but for the life of
me, I can't seem to find anything with a .275" bore size.

Just as a side note, this is all for a neat little project of mine.
I purchased a safe, and forgot the combination. It's a pushbutton
combo entry, so instead of calling the safe company for a solution,
for fun (and education) I'm building a system using the stamp, my
computer, steppers, etc. to try all the possible combinations.

Might see if someone is down in your area that has access to a lathe -- we
often have to machine adapters for our stuff because things aren't always
    the correct size.

I'm guessing the shaft is probably 7mm -- which is about 0.275.

Since it sounds as though you don't need a lot of coupling torque, you
might be able to get away with a piece of poly-vinyl tubing.

sounds like the shaft is 7 mm. you should be able to get a shaft
    coupling for that size.

If you have a drll press, drill the hole for that tap, then the 7mm
hole half way, then tap the hole. that should give you clearance.
if you have a lathe, you can make it dead center.

A less clean way would be to buy a threaded rod coupling nut. that
would be threaded all the way thry and it would be long. then you
can drill the center out. again, a drill press would be best. and
in this case, I'd clamp the drill in a vice and put the nut in the
drill press chuck. seems it would drill straighter that way.

    just a thought.

Thanks guys. Since I don't have a lathe (this is really making me
think of buying one...where to put it?!), but I do have a drill
press, is there a good technique of centering the drill bit? I also
worry about ensuring a cylinder is accurately vertically aligned in
the vice. I won't be able to put the coupler in the chuck. It's
    just too big.

I guess I could try to drill/tap set screws into a coupling nut?

Harrumph. I may just go buy a lathe!

I'll post a link to images of the contraption in operation once I get
it done. At this rate that'll be a while :P

Get a two piece clamp on coupler to fit your larger shaft (.275?) and use
.012 shim stock to bush your smaller shaft (.250). Or you can mail the part
to me and I will open it up on a lathe :)

Contact me off list if you want me to turn it for you. I live in North
    Florida.

Find a drill bit that will barely go through the center. Chuck that bit in
the press and slide the coupling on it. Lower the spindle till the coupling
is in the vise. Now it's lined up. Clamp part, and vise retract spindle
and replace bit with the size you want. Drill away.
