I have got the exact same controller chip as you and it works fine with
standard Hitachi commands, I finnally figured out my problems with the
contrast pot, but you need a message displayin to even see if that's
your prob. Just download the code from the parallax website and then run
it on your stamp, after hooking up everything to their specs, then mess
with the pot and get your message.

I did hook up the contrast. I do have control of it. But am not
certain where it should be. Should I have all the "blocks" across
line 1?
With enabling Line 2 shouldn't these blocks appear there as well?

As far as being Hitachi compatible....all the pinouts/labels are the
same so I assumed as much (insert *** jokes here!).
The controller is listed as a KS0066UP-00 which on the datasheet
seems to match the few examples I've seen.

Am I right with the OUTh for outputting data?
I've set pin 8-15 as outputs and p15 is connected to p15 on the lcd
(D7).

My local suppliers seem to want to charge $90 for a serial lcd. I
didn't appreciate the guys....consumerism/capitalism??
Anyhow, list prices off the net (although in US) are considerably
cheaper....almost after exchange rates....

I did go and pick up a serial to parallel IC as a plan later. I'd
love to be able to get this working cuz this one only cost $20.
