I am trying to get a Basic Stamp to talk to my Zaurus PDA using IRDA.
Does anyone know if I might could use the IR Buddy for this?

Has anyone had any luck trying anything like this?

thanks
chad

Nope, the IRBuddy only sends and receives the
SONY RC-5 IR signal. This is a 40 KHz or so
signalling pattern used in SONY IR products, and
used by the IRBuddy to talk to another IRBuddy.

You can also talk to an IRBuddy using a suitably
    selected 'universal' remote.

For IRDA, see the excellent 3100 article Tracy Allen
    has on his site.

I saw the article on his site. I was just wanting to be lazy and get
    something prebuilt.

Do you know where I can get some max3100 chips? Digi-key says 0
quanity, none at Jameco and maxim says they are on 13 week backorder.

    http://www.phanderson.com/ordering_1.html
Mr. Anderson had them in-stock a month ago.
I believe he keeps a stock on-hand for his students.
Make sure you order the 3.6864 crystal, and 2 caps
at the same time. He can also supply you with the
MAX-232 and caps for the 232 drivers.

Find his part number on the above page, and send him
an email -- he'll get back to you with details.

BTW, MAX3110 is a longer chip, but has the max232
on-chip, without external caps. It still needs the
same crystal and 20 pF caps for the oscillator.
Otherwise, the two chips are code and HW identical.
Oh, and the MAX3110 IS available in small quantities
    from Maxim-ic.
