Need help reading a schematic

Hi,

I am hoping someone can explain a schematic to me. It is for an IR
transmitter project. I am not sure how to read hot a POT hooks up.
I have a copy of the schematic here
http://www.chadphillips.org/map.html

Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
chad

There are three terminals on the POT. Connect either outside terminal to the
middle terminal, this is the right side connection. Connect the resistor to the
    remaining terminal.

    Thanks, that makes sense now.

Can anyone recommend a book that would explain these types of
    fundementals?
    thanks

I would start with your local community college and take a course in basic
    electronics.

Don't know of any books that would specifically answer your question.

    Chad:

It may have more info than you are looking for, but if you get the US Navy's
Basic Electronics and Electricity training manuals, you will never want for
information again. I didn't see what the original schematic you were looking
at look liked, but from reading the answers I DID see, it didn't sound like
anything especially exotic. It sounded like the total R would wind up being
equal to the portion that was connected in series with the load, since the
wiper (center terminal) would short out the rest of the pot. All a pot is is
a wirewound or carbon ribboned resistor, with a slider accross it, and the
three leads are the two ends of the resistor and the center terminal as the
wiper. If you think about it, leave the wiper unconnected on a 10Kohm pot,
and you have a fixed 10K resistor. If you leave one end unconnected, and
connect to the wiper on one lead and the other outside terminal on the
other, you have a resistor with whatever is between the wiper and connected
end as a variable resistance. Shorting one end to center has the same
effect, but leaves nothing floating, so no stray currents and thus stray
    voltage drops.

I might recommend Grob's BASIC electronics series. I used BASIC Electricity &
BASIC Electronics in my classes and the kids seemed to understand and enjoy
    those..

As cheesy as this will sound, there are some leaflett books written by Sims
at Radio Shack. Some of the circuits are indeed suspect, but for "ground
zero" electronics, this might also be an option.

Look at the Engineer's Mini-Notebook series from Radio Shack.

Probably one of the easiest books to read with great explanations of how
various parts work is the Amateur Radio Handbook from the American Radio
Relay League. Just go to the www.arrl.com web site.
