Does Parallax have a user group starter kit? It seems
like a good way to promote their product by giving

I didn't see a reply to this one, but maybe I missed it - so I apologize
in advance if I'm duplicating efforts.
We don't have a "user group starter kit." Unfortunately, it isn't
economically feasible to do so.
We strive to provide free resources, documentation, and technical
support to assist customers with their projects. I hope this is
considered valuable to you.
If you read our Getting Started page, you can learn about how to get up
and running with a budget of $49 on up.

I apologize for the confusion on the "kit"
We have created a "BASIC Stamp Club" page to provide a listing of
groups. It's at this link -
http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/resources/links/clubs.asp
I hope this is helpful. Feel free to email your group's information to
me directly (off list) or to marketing@p...

Usually you'll find Stamp enthusiasts in a variety of different hobby-
oriented groups. I haven't seen a pure "BASIC Stamp group" form
yet . . well, except for a couple of groups of students in different
places. The reason for this is that the groups tend not to focus on
the Stamp, but the things you can do with it. Therefore, I've mostly
seen large collections of Stampers hanging out in these types of
groups:
- robotic clubs
- ham radio users
- local computer user groups (general purpose, Linux fans, etc.)
- model train clubs
- R/C hobby clubs
- animated art clubs
These might be listed in some order of popularity starting from the
top. The robot clubs often collect a skilled and diverse group of
people and are a good place to look for fellow programmers.
In all cases, the groups seem to have a theme that is furthered with
a Stamp, but it's changing all the time. Take a look at the "Robotics
Art Club" - a group of kids and their parents:
http://remo.net/rac/index.htm
If you build a group we will always help make connections. We get
asked this type of question quite often "do you know any Stamp users
in my area?". It's always in our interest to send some goodies out to
the group or make an appearance once in a while.
Sincerely,
Ken Gracey

I run an informal group of hams that meet once a month on Saturday
morning for breakfast. We are officially a subgroup of the local ham
radio club. We have a few non-hams that attend. There are several
microcontroller guys and some guys that are more RF oriented. There are
also some that are there mostly to learn, although I'd venture to say
everyone learns something.
This is a great format. We go to a restaurant that is not very busy at
breakfast (e.g., not iHop) so we can actually talk. I encourage people
to bring things they have built, or are building. Many people will bring
magazine articles, or something interesting they've bought. Once in
awhile someone will make a formal presentation. I've talked about CPLDs
and FPGAs. We've had people talk to us about electronic patent history,
Maxwell's equations, and plenty more. Last month I actually ran my PIC
class for the group after breakfast (we offer an introductory PIC class
as an onsite course).
This is something anyone can do. The key is to have a few core people
who nearly always make it and to have something every month without
fail. At first, we would have only three or four people, but over time
it has grown to where we probably have about 15-20 people who will make
the breakfast from time to time, so while we don't get 100% attendance,
we have a bigger crowd.
We have a mail list where we talk the rest of the month and I use it to
get a consensus about what Saturday is best for everyone. That way we
don't conflict with other ham events, holidays, etc. Everyone pays for
their own breakfast, but there are no dues (I guess technically, 90% of
the guys belong to CLARC, our parent group, but we don't check your ID
or anything).
Of course, this isn't a Stamp group per se (although we've had several
Stamp robots appear both from me and some other members). But the point
is, this model is very easy to work out -- you just need a way to
announce it to people in your area.
I don't keep the group's page very up to date, but
http://www.clarc.org/hbsig/ for what that's worth. If you want to start
a small group, this isn't a bad model to follow.
