Help with DS1302

I am using a Basic Stamp 2 with a DS1302 as shown in Stamp Works
experiment 30. The circuit works great and I have interfaced it to a
Scott Edwards LCD, but I need to use the DS1302 with a battery back-up
and am having a tough time getting it to work with the battery. It does
not keep track of time when power is removed. When I remove power
briefly and power back up it is back to 00:00.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rich

assumes that the Battery (3 Volts typical) is tied
to the one on Pin 8, and the Line Voltage (5 Volts
typica) is tied to Pin 1. It will only draw from
Pin 8 if Pin 1 is less. Note 'Pin 8' is typically
where VCC would be put on a 'normal' chip -- but
the 1302 wants its battery there.
