The LCDs have keypad capability. There are 10 pins on the back of the
display, 5 for Rows and 5 for Columns. When a row and a column are
shorted out together, the LCD detects this and see a keypress. Then
the LCD will either store the key or fire the key out the serial port
back to your host (It depends on which setting you are using). This
allows you to create a menu system, or control other aspects of the
Basic Stamp, like turning on and off pins, or accessories.
