Stache Module

Can the BS2p be programmed using the Stache module? The Parallax website also
suggests that the BS1 can be programmed with it on the accessories page, I don't
think that this is correct.

Alex

The www.emesystems.com 'Stache' module
(see parallax.com, under Products, Accessories)
is a small unit designed to allow you to
download Stamp programs in the field. You
write them to the 'stache' on your desktop,
then take the module to the field, connect it,
and press a button to download the program.

It is $99.00, ouch. There does exist on the
web somewhere the protocol Stamp uses for
downloads -- I believe they have VB use it.

    Alex,

Yes, the Stache does support the BS2p (24 and 40 pin) and the BS2pe.
I amended the accessories page on our web site since the Stache does not
support the BS1. I apologize for the mistake.

Tracy Allen's site contains detailed information and software upgrades
    on this page -
    http://www.emesystems.com/stache.htm

In my (biased) opinion, $99 is a fair price for such a field programmer.

    Hi Alex,

The latest version of the Stache firmware is 1.7. It supports the
newest Stamps, including the BS2pe, and it supports the new windows
IDE and the object code downloaders.

The new IDE made major changes in the way that Stamps are identified
and programmed, so (thanks and a tip of the hat to Steve Parkis)
version 1.7 of the Stache firmware is a major upgrade. It also works
with older versions of the IDE and with the DOS editors as well.
    Visit
    http://www.emesystems.com/stache.htm
    for version and upgrade information.

    Eric,

I agree that the price of the field programmer is very reasonable but
I am looking for a way to program BS1 Stamps in large quantities in the field
without using a PC or laptop.

Also we use all 8 2k memory slots on our BS2p Stamps and we would need to
download 5 different programs. This would require 4 Stache Modules per site and
    increase the cost greatly.

Should anyone have experience in using BS1 Stamps on mass produced machines I
would be grateful to hear from them. In the mean time we will be purchasing a
Stache for trial in one of our production sites.

    Kind regards,
    Alex Metcalfe

    Alex,

For a field programmer, I'm only aware of the Stache as a solution.

If you're looking to program Stamps with your special code, we can offer
that service in large quantities but that doesn't help you with your
need of programming and re-programming in the field. The cost of this
service varies according to the quantity of BASIC Stamps and the
    programming time.

    Hi Alex,

As Eric mentioned, the Stache does not program the BS1, sorry.

You say you use all 8 BS2p banks in all 5 projects, but are all the
banks different? For example, say each bank 0 is different, and
banks 1 to 7 are the same in all 5 projects. In that case you could
still hold all the data in one Stache.

I realize that it might be the opposite of that, say, if most of the
eeprom is used for project-specific data patterns.

After much looking around the web, I've found:
    1. The BS1 usually uses three pins of a DB25 parallel cable to be
programmed -- PCOut (Pin 11, 'Busy'), PCIn (Pin 2, "D0"), and pin 25
    for ground.
    2. The BS1 has a 'BSAVE' directive to save a 256 byte image of the
EEPROM, which can later be downloaded into a BS1 with the stand-
alone "BSLOAD.EXE" program (Parallax: is this program still avail?)
    3. The BS1 DEBUG command sends a 4800 baud signal out the PCOut pin.

I would have thought there would be a description of the protocol, as
there is for the BS2 etc. I'd also think it would be fairly
straightforward to put a logic analyzer on PCout and PCin during
programming and figure it out. Having done that, it should be VERY
straightforward to build a Stamp 2 based gizmo with a large external
EEPROM and a button for downloading Stamp 1 programs.

BUT -- I don't think there exists a 'canned' solution yet. Good luck.

Many thanks to Eric, Tracy and Allan for taking the time to help with this
problem. In the case of one of our sites, the Stache module would provide a
solution for the machines built there.

Unfortunately, I don't think that our production volume is high enough or
predictable for Parallax to download our programs for us.

I am tempted by the idea of developing a BS1 programming module, would anybody
else be interested? Also, how much information would Parallax be willing to
    release about the download protocol?

    Kind Regards,
    Alex Metcalfe

Try "diystamp" & "Decoding the Basic Stamp" in Google.

Fantastic! Thanks! However, I did not
find the BS1 programming protocol. Parallax:
is this proprietary? (I wouldn't have thought so).
