A general Qn:
Im trying to hunt for a micontroller other than the
stamp. I was trying to list down the figure of merits
for choosing a microntroller
i list a few. Please add and give you comments. ANy
help shall be appreciated.

peripheral interrupt handlers
Large number of IO
pulse-width modulator (PWM) outputs
watchdog timer
Dedicated A/D channels
Programmable wait states
timer/counters
capture/compare channels
Enough RAM
Enough on chip registers
Complete system development support
Thanks very much

Actually you should probably ask this question on the comp.arch.embedded or
the alt.microcontrollers.8bit news groups as this is for Basic Stamps.
I don't think you'll get a lot of help here if it isn't a Basic stamp.

    Hi Harshit,

Not sure this is the best place to ask this since this is a stamp forum.
But I think more important questions may be, what I am going to use the
microcontroller for, and what features do I need. There are so many
    different options out there.

Picking a "do everything" controller will mean you are compromising
things like power consumption and cost per unit, where a better matched
(but less equipped) controller may be cheaper and have longer battery
    life...

    Good luck...

    ...Aaron

    Harshit,

Depending on your experience, there are other factors than just features and
    performance.

    Like:

    Tech support.
    Active forums.
    Ease of use
    Stabilty of product
    Development time.
Quantity of sample code and projects available
    Learning curve

There are some jobs that a Stamp can't do. But unless you have a need that a
Stamp simply can't fill, I would consider the Stamp.

    Cost of development system (Hardware)
(Tester Board, Chip Burner, EPROM emulator,
    In-Circuit Programming Dongle...)

    Cost of development software
    (Compiler, linker, downloader,
    debugger)

Number and cost of components for a minimally
    operational system.

    Built in Operating System:
    Cost (if any)
Need (for simple apps, may not need any)
Size (in bytes, amount of resources needed JUST for OS)

Number/Size/Quality/Duration of WebSites or Discussion Groups

    Quality of Vendor Support
(Could be: Here it is, figure it out yourself) or
(Could be: Here it is, this is how you do A/D, this
is how you do serial interfacing, this is
how you do three-wire interfacing, this is
how we expect you to interface memory, ...)

With the Stamp, I've been spoiled that the development
system, downloader, debugger, PROM burner, PROM eraser,
Operating System, Power, EEPROM, RAM, Programming Port,
Debugging Port -- are either free software, included
on the $50.00 module, or supplied on a $99 Board of
Education. It can be easy to forget that most of this
stuff is not 'free' with other processors.

And, the parallax 'how to do it' resources are excellent.

P.S. Plus metrics for: Time per average instruction,
number of cycles per instruction, max clock rate,
    max supported RAM, Interrupt latency.
