Can''t Communicate. Help.

Hi. I'm new to the group so forgive me if this has been covered, or
please refer me to earlier posts my searches missed.
I bought a "Stamp Stick 2SX" from Rogue Robotics based on the
PArallax Stamp 2SX, on a 30-pin SIM type PC Bpard w/proto space. All
was fine, many programming iterations until my hamhanded soldering
finally messed something up and it no longer communicated.
I got another, and now a third, and neither of them has ever
been "identified" by my Compaq 1245 win 98 running BS Editor 1.33
(same as had worked on stick #1). I have connected only DC power
(through a 7806 regulator for +6Vdc normally, also from a 9v battery
or 12V nominal (17V actual) dc wall wart for tests), and the 4
straight through comm lines (Sin, Sout, ATN (reset), and Ground to DB-
9 pins 2,3,4,&5 as Rouge specifies (and worked earlier).
I have also tried Stamp2sx.com in a DOS window and on an older
486sx33 laptop I resurrected for the purpose. I made another DB9
with clip leads connected to pin 2 & 5 (input * ground) so I
can "listen" to the serial characters sent to & from the PC and
stamp. During the V1.33 'Identify' routine the PC sends, and the
Stamp Echos (both at 9600 baud) the characters B,e,X,P & I (commas ,
ampersand & spaces added) and the identify window says "Loopback Yes,
Echo Yes, but no device type or version.
The RS232 voltages are nominally OK (-3, -7, -7 or so for Sin, Sout,
and ATN, rising during 'identify')
I've tried all I can think of to no avail. Again, this is the
second, maybe third stamp stick affected. I've tried changing
stamps, software, computers (and the two computers were able to
communicate serially with each other, so the ports seem OK). Any
help would be appreciated.
