Sorry, I haven't built them yet. It's just a concept at present. Each beacon
can be very inexpensive, or could get more complicated. An IR emitter could
be mounted on a servo, or a mirror on the servo, and different codes
transmitted based on the angle. Small bots could even have beacon
transmitters.

A beacon could use a TV remote IC, 3V, low current. Various intensities might
be useful for detecting range (and perhaps to avoid reflections, or take
advantage of them too).

The tabrobotkit yahoo group has some files on the chip that their IR remotes
use. There are lots of chips for that, and also on the receiving end. I have
a couple I got from Radio Shack, and 3 different ones from Jameco.

As for visualization, consider placing a flashlight on the floor so it
projects a beam of light. A robot could follow the beam and determine the
intensity. Now consider two more flashlights projecting beams that intersect
with the other ones, to form a triangle. With signals encoded in the beams,
the robot can tell which beam of light it is following, and what direction it
is going, toward or away from each emitter.

That's the rough idea; I don't know how well it might work out.

Thanx Fred for the concept. Do you think I could program the bot to find
beacon A, once at Beacon A the bot goes to Beacon B and so on. Finally
when a voltage monitor sets off, the bot looks for the recharge beacon.
Is that possible? I wanted something like my bot going through different
rooms and then back to the recharge.

    Thanx again

    Mike, Fred,

I think the beacons are a great idea. But you might need more than the
beacons, especially if the bot is to go room to room in a large house. Also
it seems as if some object detection will be required, in case stuff gets in
    the way.

If the bot will do a specific route, perhaps you could do something similar
to the "follow the tape" thing. Instead of tape, put tiny NIB magnets along
the path, and use linear hall sensors to follow them. Maybe use the magnets
down hallways and the beacons in rooms, with a little object detection in
case the dog gets in the way. I have never done such a thing, just a
    thought.

    Jonathan,
What are NIB Magnets and linear hall sensors? I have already got a
object detection system working and calibrated so I just have to get the
    "route"
    thing going.
    Thanx

    Mike,

NIB stands for Neodymium Iron Boron, which is the combination of elements
used to make really strong magnets, the strongest there are, I think. Check
out: http://www.wondermagnet.com/dev/main.shtml . They sell lots of them.
They can also be scrounged free from old hard drives. Small NIBs can be
    gotten surplus and on ebay.

Hall sensors detect magnetic fields. They come in at least two flavors,
linear and I guess non-linear. Linear ones vary a resistance based on the
strength of the magnetic field. The others are an on/off type, as soon as
the magnetic field is strong enough it switches.

As I said, I have never done this. I would get a Hall sensor and experiment
with a magnet and see what range you can get. Then figure out how many
magnets it would take and see if it is practical. The reason I thought it
would be cool is that the magnets would be much more easily hidden than the
    tape method.
