Problem with Basic Stamp Activity Board

Hello,
I've recently started to learn about robotics and embedded
applications. I've begun to use a Basic Stamp Activity Board for
educational projects. I've been able to make a few tests with the
BSAC, using a Stamp1 IC provided with the board, but only by booting
from the diskette in DOS. This is rather cumbersome. Question #1 is:
is it possible to program it with Windows 2000 or XP using the Windows
editors or at least by not booting from the diskette.
Question #2: I've not been able to run the Activity Board using a
Stamp 2sx pluged-in. The windows editor tells me that there is
something pluged-in in the serial COM port (echo/loopback is OK), but
absolutely nothing comes in or out of the board. Any ideas why or how
to deal with that ?
Your help is much appreciated.
