Has anyone had any experience with the OPTO 22 relay board?
Parallax has a baord for it on back rder, but I'd like my kids to use
one now. They experimented with using the Stamp to operate it.
The Stamp can turn on the relay's LED, but not close the relay
contacts.

I assume it is just a matter of current, but would like to see what
others have doen first. I have some spare ULN2803s to use in the
project.

Paul, I have used opto22 modules for many applications. The best way to
drive them with the stamp is to use an additional transistor on the output
to trigger the module. This takes the load off the stamp and the drive for
the opto comes from another power supply. For an example how to wire up the
transistors, check out my web site.

I may be wrong but if the Opto 22 was for AC loads then applying power to
the LED side will not cause the output to conduct without present of AC.

Opto22 is a brand name and consists of several different modules some of
which are for switching dc, ac, and ac input and dc input modules and all
supporting boards, power supplies, control modules and such.

    Paul,

    I found a FAQ here:

    That reads:

Product Support FAQ and Technical Reference

    2.20 - SSR Applications subFAQ

    Q: What is a solid-state relay?

A: An SSR is a semiconductor device that can be used in place of a
mechanical relay to switch electricity to a load in many applications.
Solid-state relays are purely electronic, normally composed of a low current
"control" side (equivalent to the coil on an electromechanical relay) and a
high-current load side (equivalent to the contact on a conventional relay).
SSRs typically also feature electrical isolation to several thousand volts
between the control and load sides. Because of this isolation, the load side
of the relay is actually powered by the switched line; both line voltage and
a load (not to mention a control signal) must be present for the relay to
    operate.

    Which confirms my earlier statement.
