easiest way to drive a stepper motor

Hi,
I have a bipolar stepper motor with 4 wires and I also have an
EDE1204 IC to drive the motor.
My question is: Is it necessary to use an IC to drive a stepper
motor? All I want to do is send a pulse to the motor to make it step
about 90 degrees in one direction and 90 degrees in another direction
(CW & CCW).
If I can do away the IC, how would I be able to hook up the motor
to basic stamp 2?
Also, my programming skill isn't that good, can someone please
provide a sample code to do what I just described?
Any help will be appeciated.
Mick
