Oooooo.... a challenge? OK...

Right out of my desk drawer... I swear! But don't ask me why.
Bet my IBM 129 "Card Removal Tool" has really got you green with
envy... :^)

But do you have a 132 column ruler and an IBM 360 Reference Data sheet? I
think there is even a VOLIE editor book around somewhere. I dug through the
Smile pile even further and found some RPG coding sheets as well.

Got any 8" diskettes?

Hi,

I guess I'm the oldest (or fartest?) old fart on the list. My formal
applied science involvement started round 1945 and my main weapons (Before
Computers) were a series of 12" K&E slide rules, the latest of which I stiil
keep. BTW, I still use a 386 with various attachments as a very reliable
data acquisition system. DOS is not too bad! And, of course, several
BSII's...

Do you remember the bulky ferrite memories, costing more than 1$/bit.
In that time, the program eprom was a punched paper teletype tape.
Then came the 6508, and I played with a SYM.
It was a bunch of chips on a A4 motherboard, with less power than a BS2.
The Apple II was unaffordable.

Hi Trygve,

Well, I guess I've lost this round. Only one Psion, and just 7 years old
with which I play chess... But I do have a programmable Commodore 100 which
works!

Got my 132 column ruler (several of them), my White RAMAC-650 and 1401
reference cards, my Green System/360 and Yellow System/370 Reference
cards as well and even my 1956 copy of "IBM Manual for Relay and Circuit
Breaker Adjustment and Operation" as well as my original IBM issued tool
for adjusting spring tension and relay arm position on the early relay
operated "computers". Also my IBM logo'ed VOM for troubleshooting vacuum
tube circuits in computers. Cobol and RPG sheets shouldn't even be
considered as I was still using them from off the shelf stock while
supporting ancient but still running Cobol and RPG programs when I
retired from IBM last year. 8" diskettes? How about a drawer full of
wire jumpers used for programming plug boards before magnetic storage
was much more than a dream, or an 8k magnetic core array from a SYS/360
mod 30? One that was scrapped after trying to repair it, one bit (yes
bit) at a time, by hand, with a microscope and the smallest hand held
solder iron in the world at the time. Kinda like doing brain surgery on
a computer. Lot'sa memories!

And I have the "Reference Data for Radio Engineers", published by Federal
Telephone and Radio Corporation, copyright 1943. And I still use the patch
cords from Heathkit's first Analog Computer, purchased in 1961.

Been there done that.
At TI (Dallas) we held the patent on the first automated wire bonders.
Programs were boxes of cards. Converted to punch tape.
Then you go to the minicomputer (not micro) with 17 switches across the top
( 16 bits , 1 load )
Bit switch in the primitive loader which let you read a short tape. (about
50 instruction, learned to do it in your sleep)
Load the short tape called the bootstrap To teach the machine how to read
the main tape.
Then load the main program.
Unbelievable when we got to 64k tapes took several minutes.
As Gene says you got real good at going to the address changing the assy
code one instruction at a time on the switches.

Keypunch machines
IBM cards (boxes full, being shuffled at the card reader)
Once a day compiles to save money on the 360.
Bitswitch data entry.
Line by line assy code debug ( not breakpoints)
Having 20 patches in you code by the end of the day (new compile the next
morning)
64k of memory
"
Now I get upset when I cannot remember where I saved that damn file on my
harddrive.

I guess I might as well date myself, too. When I got out of college in 1968
with a BSEE, I had taken every computer course LSU offered: ONE Fortran
course and a course in something called Analog computing, NOT digital mind
you. I went to work in Dallas, where our work was in real time flight
simulation. The assembler code was on punched paper tape and was loaded into
the computer by first loading the assembler. There was NO operating system.
We debugged the code from the console of the machine by displaying memory
addresses and changing the code on the fly. A long time ago.

Yep (templates), and Not any more (children used them up as drawing sheets
sometime ago).

It interested me that Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation is
soliciting bids for a team of 26 COBOL programmers to do on-going
application development.

As a student, I was involved in helping my university in converting FORTRAN
and COBOL programs from a 60-bit word CDC machine to a 32-bit VAX--one had
to be careful to not loose precision in the weather models.

yet another old-timer,
Daniel

Mike:

I'm sitting here with my green GX20-8020-2 Flowcharting template. Its
right next to the flowcharts sheets, the rpg pads, cobol coding
sheets, 401 wiring guide, 1401 autocoder manual, green bal card,
yellow 370 cards among others. My wife calls me a packrat, I call it
memorabila.

Later,

Well, i'm not exactly an old fart, i guess you can say, 'cause i'm
15! But i do have some 8" diskettes, a box full of about 60 them in
the basement! The next oldest thing would be probably either a 5
1/4" floppy drive or a 3.5" 300mb ide hard drive. I recently built a
computer from spare parts and included the floppy drive, works
fine ;)
Actually, come to think of it, I had an old laptop, a toshiba T1200,
it was given to me by a friend to play around with and take apart, I
was 8 at the time and didnt think of seeing what it was worth. We
couldn't find the boot disks for it so we just took it apart,
mistake?
Cheers!
