any ideas for interesting programs that can be serial triggered

I am a newbie to serial communication with stamps, I have made two
stamps communicate with each other and a digital to analogue
converter communicate with the stamp that sort of (basic) thing. But
I want to try communicating with my computer.

Does anyone know any interesting (and preferably inexpensive)
programs that can be triggered using the basic stamp. I am playing
(with mixed results) with one called Homewhatcher where the stamp can
trigger a web cam to take stills which are then posted on a web site

Any ideas on interseting programs doesnt matter what they really do I
just want an excuse to learn that a bit more fun
