SumoBot newbie problems

My son got a Parallax SumoBot kit, and we've been trying to get it to
work.

Using the "big" computer, which is a generic 1 ghz Athlon running
Win98, we can get the BASIC Stamp Editor (V1.33) to talk to the bot
over the serial cable, but it will not actuate the servos when running
the motor test program. It will display line sensor data in the debug
window when running the line test program, so we know the comm is
working. The green LED remains well lit up whenever the power switch
is on. (yes, it's in position 2)

Using the Toshiba Portege 660CDT laptops, we can't get it to
communicate. The Stamp editor shows that it is getting loopback on
serial port Com1, but no echo. We have two of these laptops, both
behave the same way.

I have quite a bit of experience playing with PCs, but not much at all
with robotics...but I do have some experience playing with various
electronic "stuff" over the past 30 years.

TIA for any suggestions!
Jim

Does the COM port have "FIFO" enabled? I use a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop,
and just before I got my BOE, someone had suggested that disabling FIFO for
the COM port was necessary on his, so I disabled it on mine, and have had no
    problems communicating with the Stamp.

FYI, it's in Control Panel, Ports, "Settings...", "Advanced...". Uncheck
the "FIFO Enabled" check box. BTW, I use NT 4.0.

    Hello

Did you plug wires between Vs1 and Vss and between Vs2 and Vss (as shown on
figure 3.4) on page 26 of the sumobot manual ?

I forget to do that and I spend long time to understand what happened ...

There are a couple of jumpers on the board that are not shown in the
documentation and are not installed. If I remember right, they connect the
ground lead of the servo to the ground on the board. The jumpers have to do
with adding a feature to sense motor current in the event the servos stall.

The jumpers ARE shown in the documentation, but weren't mentioned in the
original version of the manual -- my fault, I thought we were installing the
jumpers in production. Thankfully, the first manual had a short production
run. The latest manual (which can be downloaded) from the Parallax web site.

As pointed out, these jumpers connect the servos to ground. Why the jumpers?
Advanced users can replace the jumpers will a low-ohm resistor and monitor
the voltage drop across them to detect motor stall.

    Thanks for the quick help!

Looking at the schematic, I see where the jumpers would need to
be...and I would probably have figured it out on my own in only a few
    hours :)

I disabled the FIFO on com port a laptop, I'll try it again and see
    what happens.

    Thanks again,
    Jim
