Surface Mount ICs

I purchased some ICs from Maxim a couple weeks ago, when they arrived I realized
I had mistakenly ordered surface mount ICs. As I'm not too terribly experienced
with electronics, I'm clueless on how you are suppose to mount them. I need
someone to help me see the light... hehehe ;-)
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris Shuster

if you want a surface mount
adapter that fits a DIP socket.

I have mounted a few SMT components (not many) and got away with it. I can't
say how if I have just been lucky or what. All I have done is prepare a PCB
for it, manually tinned the area, as opposed to a tin solution. I then place
the component in the correct place and clamp it with a heat sink if
possible. Then I heat the trace going to the component until the solder
melts. On some larger components I have pre-tinned the leads. So far so
good, they have all worked, but don't be surprised if a bunch of "real"
SMTers say this is crazy. But it has worked for me!
Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

There are only two options I know of to deal with your problem, well, three
options.
1. Return the parts for through hole type.
2. You can purchase small PCB's with surface mount pads already on the board
and the board then has either terminals or holes to connect your surface
mount pcb to the "outside".
3. Make your own PCB. www.expresspcb.com
This company has free software to download. Software is easy to use. You can
get 3 two sided board with vias about 2.5 by 3.5 for $62 in about 2 days
after you send them your file. I have used this service many times and am
very satisfied with the service.

What is the Maxim part you received. If you want to order the surface mount
to DIP adapter, I'll be glad to solder the ICs on to the adapter for you - no
charge.
Please contact me off list.

Once again thanks, this is what makes this list so great, getting 5+ answers
within 24 hours... (then theres me and my slow replies hehehe, I'm what 3

had the same problem.
Digikey.com has the adapter boards. Called surf boards. They have a $25
minimum unless you want to pay $5 in shipping. Nice folks, lots of
stock, great catalog.
