oscillators and clocks

I'm trying to use a stamp to replace the oscillator in a non digital clock -
the kind with hands. My plan is to eventually have sensors so I can do
things like make the clock hands spin around faster or go backwards or do
other things depending on the environment.
I think I can approach it in two ways.
I can try to change the wiring of an existing quartz clock because it already
has the hands and everything I need. Does anyone have any idea of how to do
that? I don't know a lot about oscillator circuits and how to tap into one.
It seems like the motor and circuitry and now usually all one unit.
Or I can build a clock from scratch. buy the stepper motor, construct some
gears, buy some clock hands and figure out how to mount it all. this might
give me more flexibility, but would be a lot more complicated, i think.
any suggestions?
thanks

never have time to build it so maybe you will. Use a stepper motor to move
the minute hand only. Add a pin on the minute hand that will contact the
hour hand when it gets near. To advance the hour you push it with the minute
hand; to get past the hour hand you reverse the minute hand and go all the
around. This will leave a minute or so that can't be displayed correctly;
but hey it's a crazy clock right?
