Read / Write commands

Hello, I appologize if this question has already been asked dozens of
times, I wasn't able to find my answer when skimming through older
posts.
How do you use the Write command and the Read command?
I have the BOE Bot setup to use the IR Sensors to avoid objects, and
I have it store as a variable, which direction it moves. At the end
of the program, I want it to store the information so that it could
repeat its movements after i turn it off and back on again.
After reading the large STAMP Manual I thought I used the WRITE and
READ commands properly, but i can't get it to respond properly.
If anyone knows where I can find a tutorial of how to use those
commands, or has a simple write / read BS2 program they could share,
it would be greatly appreciated. :-)
