Interfacing with Siemens PD3435

Has anyone had any luck using the BS2 to control a Siemens PD3435? BG Micro
sells them under their part # LED1059 and the datasheet is available
http://www.bgmicro.com/pdf/pd24xx.pdf (I know its not exactly the same but
the pinout and operational data is the same as the hard copy that came with
the device from BGmicro)

I'm down to just connecting the stamp to data/address lines and WR pin
through 1K resistors, Also I directly pulled (through 10K resistors) CE0
high and CE1 low to select the chip, and clk-SEL high, RD high.

in the data sheet they show the pattern for putting a "$" symbol in digit 0.
I followed that and got it to display a blinking "$" a few times... now I
get nothing with the same code. I tell it to do a display test (using the
data/address lines) and all the leds light up like it should. I can also
clear that and do it again without an issue.

Anyone have any links/access to more information, code, or datasheets? I'm
totally at a loss as to why it works on somethings, and doesn't work after a
few semi successful attempts. I've also tried other digits and characters
with no luck.
