I'm having some trouble soldering some tiny components, say on the order of
14 pins in an 8mm x 8mm package..does anyone know where to find soldering
irons precise enough, or some tips on doing this?

A fairly expensive but excellent solution is solder paste and a hot air
    solder pencil.

I do the standard surface-mount IC's at work with a 1/16" chisel tip and a
magnifier lamp. I leave the fine-pitch stuff to the ladies who do it every
day. They use a larger tip and can solder multiple leads at once without any
    bridges.

How much do you want to spend?

It used to be that you could find economical 25w to 30w soldering pencils
with replaceable tips. With a steady hand and thin solder you can do this
sort of work with a small conical tip. I would have thought it would be
easy to find this sort of equipment for $50 or so. I just did a quick
search and couldn't find any. There were a few low cost irons with
descriptions that said "replaceable tip", but the sites didn't actually seem
    to sell the small tips.

In the $150 - $250 you will definitely find temperature controlled stations
with the proper tips. I use a Hako station. Cooper/Weller is the
    traditional US brand.

If you are going to do this all day, search for "rework station" or "reflow
equipment" and you will find all sorts of very cool systems for thousands of
dollars. I am on the verge of stepping up to a commercial hot air system.

If you search the archives at www.piclist.org for "smt soldering" you will
find some recent discussion of low cost home brew equipment. Here is one
example: http://www.ustr.net/smt/index.htm. Other people have had success
with a hot air system created using a cheap soldering pencil and an aquarium
pump (this was the most recent discussion on piclist).

If you have trouble finding something that will work for you, ask again and
I'll try to search some more or provide a specific recommendation.
