printer driver

Has anyone ever attempted to operate PC printer from a
stamp? This would be very interesting to me. Do PC
printers accept standard ASCII codes in parallel
format?

Thanks
Scott

Some do and some don't. Serial printers are easiest. Parallel printers
require a good number of pins. However, many cheap printers now don't
really accept ASCII. They do most of their work in a Windows driver and
just send codes to drive the print head over the connection. A
postscript printer (serial) and a Stamp could do some amazing things I
    imagine.

    Scott,

You might have a look at our EDE1400 Printer Interface IC. It receives
2400 Baud serial data and controls the standard Centronics bus to print
what it receives. A datasheet can be downloaded from www.elabinc.com

Should be pretty easy -- I would use some sort of parallel-output shift
register to keep from tying up so many Stamp pins though.

If you need simple, get an Epson LX300+ -- they do serial and parallel and
are under $200. They are industrial quality narrow carriage dot matrix
    though.
