Please Help with GP2D12

Hello All,
I'm trying to use a GP2D12 for obstacle detection, actually two, but
if I can one working I'll be happy. I'm trying to do it without an
ADC, using RCTIME.
What I have is "working", but I'm getting wild results from a
stationary target, with swings in the 15% to 20% range.
Here's what I have:
From the BS2 pin to a 220 Ohm resistor to the junction of a 47K
resistor, which goes to the GP2D12 output, and a .01 uF cap, which
goes to +5 Volts.
If this is not correct, could someone please tell me how to wire this
up.
If this is correct, would someone please give me some insight in to
what to do to "smooth out" the results.
TIA,
Muggs
