needing help running a transistor off basic stamp 2 to activate a dc motor

Hello there,
im new to all this electronics and basic stamp stuff, so please excuse me if
this sounds like a stupid question...
ive been trying to activate a dc motor from my basic stamp 2 using a transistor
but have had no results. ive connected pin 0 on the stamp to the base pin of
the transistor, and have a seperate power suply running through the C & E parts
of the transistor where it connects to a dc motor. and another wire running
from the power supply for the motor to the other side of the motor. ive tried
using the VDD ground pin on the stamp to try and get it to work, but that doesnt
make any difference either (i may be putting it in the wrong spot).
ive attached a diagram that shows what im doing. could someone take a look and
tell me what im doing wrong please?

In particular, you need to make sure the emitter is at ground and that
all grounds are connected (that is, your 5V ground and the other power
supply's ground). You also need a base resistor. The load should go from
the + supply to the collector of the transistor. You may need a diode
across the load if it is inductive (as it almost surely is). The band on
the diode would point to the + supply.
