Stud finder schematic/explanation?

I'm nearly ready to start work on that ice-thickness sensor I was
talking about a few months ago. As far as I can tell, the best method
for this would be similar to a stud sensor, using capacitance. Thing
is, I can't seem to find any resources talking about this type of
sensing.
Anyone know a site or book that might help me get started?

Go to google and search on "how stuff works". This web sight has an
explanation on the stud finder and lots of other stuff.
