Hi everyone, I was just wondering if someone could give me a
suggestion as to were I should start to learn about BASIC Stamp. All
suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks, Alex

    Alex,

    I'm still a beginner too.

    1. for me the "StampWorks Kit" did the trick - I cannot say enough good
things about how I went from knowing zero about electronics to being
able to do quite a lot in a very short amount of time. I thought it
was a little pricey at first, but you really get a lot for your money
and by the time I got to expirement 2 or 3 I had forgotten all about
money and was just concerned with learning.

    2. all the cirriculm for both StampWorks and Stamps In Class is
available for download from the parallax site. You might read some of
both before you decide if you want to go the Stamp Works route or the
    Board of Education/Stamps Cirriculm route.

    3. as always, you will learn a lot from reading this list everyday.

    best of luck to you.

    mkl

And don't forget Al's book or my monthly column in Nuts & Volts magazine.
You can get all past issues of the column (written by Scott Edwards, Lon
Glazner and myself) in a three-book set from Parallax.

I am new to the basic stamp. I am currently using for a digital
electronics course I am taking in High School. I was wondering if
anyone has ideas for some programs i could make using the basic
stamp 1. Any suggestions would be useful.

    thanks

You might want to try making a small robot, just servos for motors and a
sensor for object detection. Mine uses a team of two SRF04 sonar rangers
and two GPD02 infrared rangers. It is pretty simple and I think you
could just use one of either type of sensors mounted on top of a servo.
If you need help email me off list for more details.

Many projects require the Stamp II, but you can still do a lot with
the Stamp I. For a great list of ideas, go to LOSA (short for List
    Of Stamp Applications).

    Good luck,

If you have a choice about it, I highly
recommend the BS2. It has more pins, has
more memory space, has a few better commands,
runs faster. True, it is about $25.00 more,
which would have stopped me in High School.

Still, if you can swing it I'd go with the
    BS2 over the BS1.

Be sure that you look at the Basic Stamp 1 application notes that are
available free for download from the Parallax web site. They hold a
wealth of good projects and information. Written by Scott Edwards,
a real pioneer with the application of the Stamp 1.

I see that your handle is yankeesfan. Maybe you could make something
like a score keeper, with leds and pushbuttons. Okay, you can just
look at the scoreboard. But maybe for your own games.

I have just assembled the OEM BS2 -Rev A, and I am having a few problems...

When I click the identify button it does sense the com port, however, when I run
a test program it tells me a Basic Stamp is not found... I am using a Radio
Shack Breadboard for prototyping... along with a 9v battery power supply. I
connected the pos to Vin and the neg to Vss.

I double check my sodering joints and the components all seem to be OK.

    The battery gets extremely HOT.

    Any suggestions..

The battery getting extremely HOT is not normal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although you
have probably rechecked the wiring more than 3 or 4 times, take a break for a
few hours, come back to your project and check the wiring again.

What is the voltage across the battery when everything is hooked up?

If the battery is getting hot you almost certainly have a short somewhere.
Are any of the other components heating up?

Disconnect all your breadboarding so you are just dealing with the OEM board
at first. Quadruple check parts orientation and inspect carefully for
solder bridges and odd looking solder joints. Use a magnifying glass if you
have one. A good solder joint is slightly shiny and forms a smooth somewhat
concave cone around the component lead and grows uniformly from the solder
    pad which is its base.

If all looks good, change batteries because the heat makes it likely that
its capacity has been significantly reduced. Run the following silly
program to verify that your stamp is really alive:

    '{$STAMP BS2}
    debug "hello world"
    end

If you get "hello world" in the debug terminal window, move on to checking
your breadboard extensions. If not, you may need some hands-on help from
someone with more debugging experience or from customer service at Parallax
or the dealer where you bought the kit.

The basic stamp is the only component on the board... and the stamp module
    feels normal..

I'll double check all solder joints and replace the battery. Thanks for the
    feedback.

Its either a short, or the regulator and/or caps are backwards.
