Making an IC

I am looking for suggestions on which chips are good for general all around
use. What I mean is, I am looking to spend some cash to build myself a good
(1 or more of the same chips) all around chip selection to work with
steppers, servos, sensors, serial communication, opto-isolators, memory,
data collection, ADC, voltage regulation, flip flops, timers, mux, demux,
bcd decoders, etc. From your experiences, which chips (and capacitors) keep
popping up and would make a good investment so as not to "run out" when an
idea hits.

Some ideas:

SIPO: 4094 or 74595
PISO: 74165
ADC: A good easy to use 8 bit chip is the TLC548
FF's: 4013 (D Type)
Timers: 555
Buffering: 74HC245

I have also slowly been building up an I2C series of chips for various
devices:
SIPO: PCF8574A
Memory: 24LCXX
Time keeping: PCF8583

GALs are nice, though kinda pricey for the programer for them. Think
of them as blank logic chips. Roll your own.

Actually, instead of GALs, go with PLDs. Higher density, easier to use,
cheaper to start. Look at http://tutor.al-williams.com and/or
http://www.al-williams.com/pldhome.htm

Would anyone be interested in an :IC toolbox" that only contained a BS2?

For robotics, I like to keep around spare IR detectors and IR emiters. The
cheap Radio shack can style.
276-143 High output IR led
276-137B IR detector module
276-080 LED holders/mount
276-1657 CDS cell for light detecting.
LED's for testing purposes, output etc.
I like the LM2940 5V regulator it has a low dropout voltage and can be used
with 6V battery packs unlike the 7805.
SN754410 Half H bridge driver for small motors. They can be stacked for
higher output as well.
If you can afford it for robotics. Spare GPD202 sensors for range detection
www.Acroname.com
Devantech srf04 range detector. These two are getting pricey of course.
www.Acroname.com
I myself would love to have a spare stamp on hand. I am always robbing a
stamp from a working robot, to test a new one. I can never seem to find
enough cash to have a spare one on hand. Oh well :) Maybe Santa will be nice
to me this year. Right now even, I have my first robot sitting their gutted
without his brain. HE HEE. the poor thing got a lobotomy. Thats right... all
my robots have many disorders HE HE HEE
Finally do not forget for a one off test of a chip, many manufacturers will
send free samples. If you find a chip useable you can then buy some from
vendors. That is what I did with the SN754410
I am interested in this topic and hope to see more people respond.
