I'm absolutely new to programming microcontrollers, but not new to
programming ( been programming using C on Solaris for 7 years ) . <-
There's my bio.
I have just a simple question. In my first project i'll be needing a
timer, up to the thousandth of a second would be perfect. Would I need
a external source to generate a pulse, like a ocsillator or a 555 timer,
or is there a means to do it with the basic stamp 2 chip?
Thanks
Dennis

or a 555 for about $10.00 including all parts circuit board...(this does not
include the $150 --- $50/hr ---- to make the board and then figure out your
wiring errors, solder bridges etc)

for such small units of time. You'd probably have to go to a faster
processor that supports interrupts (to have it stop exactly when you want it
to).
May want to look at the atmel chips. 8mhz chip for ~$8. Bit more of a pain
to learn how to use and set up a programming cable for though. You might
want to experiment with various things on stamps first, they are a *lot*
easier to learn on and Parallax has superb resources for newbies like you
(and me).
