Auto Navigation Unit

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to build my own auto navigation unit for my car, just for a
bit of fun. It doesn't need a monitor, just to yell out "turn left" or
"turn right" and give me some distances. Initially, it won't need any
user input - it just determines the most appropriate route to a fixed
location (home). BASIC STAMP is of course my preferred controller.

Anyone have any ideas on cost-effective (but reasonable quality)
embedded GPS receivers that work well with basic stamps? The other thing
I'll need is some sort of external hard disk with map and audio
information. Lastly, I'll need some sort of audio output chip to attach
to my car stereo (via the tape player).

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Cheers big ears

Andrew Ritchie

    Hello

There is an excellent GPS development kit for sale at Astrotoo Electronics.
I bought one the other day and its a piece of cake to learn all about GPS
and interface to the stamp. Comes with instructions for interfacing to the
stamp. In any case their phone number is 321-727-9010. You can see the kit
    on their site at www.astrotoo.com

    Hope this helps.

    Fritz

That place looks a bit pricey -- you can buy a whole, new, guaranteed,
handheld GPS for what they get for their kit.

Yes but its easier to learn and experiment with a unit made just for that
rather than have to cut open and hack a handheld unit that's not made to be
experimented with. Hand held units are also usually "closed units" in the
sense that you can't get schematics or instruction sets etc.

We found that for what we wanted to do it was easier to go with the
    development kit.

You can get a PC cable, and most output NMEA data. Parallax even has some
info on how to read / decode the data with a Stamp.
