Just got my BOE with a BS2 stamp. Installed the Editior V1.33, on my Winbook J4
running XP Pro with a Belkin USB to serial adapter plugged in as COM5. It talks
to my Palm Pilot so I'm fairly sure it works.

Type in the Hello World program but the editor doesn't recognize the BS2 stamp.
When I hit run I get the window that says:
Download Progress
Port Status - Device Type - Version - Loopback - Echo
COM5 blank blank YES YES

When I hit Run, the Belkin serial port LEDs blink several times, so I know the
editor is talking to the serial port.

Could this thing be DOA out of the box? Wrong type serial cable provided?
What do I do next?

If you're going use the same port as you use for your Palm, you have to
disable your hot sync software so the Stamp editor can use that port.

We use the Bafo USB-to-Serial cables at Parallax with no problems.

It is very unlikely that your Stamp is DOA. We test every unit before it
goes out. Not that it couldn't be bad, but your problem is likely with the
hot sync software preventing the editor for using that port, or you have a
USB adaptor that doesn't work with the Stamp (we're not just
    sending/receiving serial data).

Jon is right about the palm hot sync programs but I see below that you are
using the Belkin adapter. I believe I've see several post that say the
Belkin is not compatible with the stamp stuff. Someone else please speak up
on this. What adapters are some of you using that do work and with what
    configurations (equipment)

    Thanks for the info!

The Palm Hot sink has to be set manually on my XP environment as I use a
bunch of different stuff, so that isn't the problem. I'm sure it isn't the
stamp either since I tried a BS2-SX module also.

    I'll try and find a Bafo USB-to-Serial cable adapter. A D-Link DSB-S25
also doesn't work, but that is probably a lack of Win XP driver problem.

    I really appreciate the help!

What brand of USB adapter do you have at the mo'?

I found that I couldn't get any Belkins to work, and most Keyspans. I
couldn't get a hold of the USA-19 that Parallax says works, as my work place
wanted me to buy it outright with no chance of return - which I wasn't going
    to fall for.

So, in the end, I did a bit of research, and came across FTDI, and ended up
    *making* my own adapter.

It works perfectly under Mac OS 9.2.2, and Windows 98 (real and Virtual PC).

I haven't tested it under XP yet. However, the FTDI solution supports all
the RS232 lines (which I found was the basic issue - at least for me - with
the Belkins and the Keyspans that I had access to).

So, if it isn't something else holding up your serial port, maybe try the
FTDI solution (http://www.ftdichip.com/). They have a link on their front
page to my site that will lead you to my adapter...

    cheers,

    Dontronics has these chips along with info and modules here;

He is in AU but is easy to order from(and the USD is worth almost 2x AUD).

This morning I purchased an IOGEAR Model GUC232A-A and it works fine with my
USB-only laptop running XP. Found it a bit pricey ($39.95 at Micro Center) but
I got it immedialely. TigerDirect.com had the BAFO adapter for $19.95 but
refused to ship via USPS to my POB in WV. They cancelled the order, leavng me
to fight Paypal for a refund...

I can second the reoomendation for this IOGear model. BUT -- for use
with Windows XP, I had to download their latest drivers, because the
driver in the box wouldn't recognize their USB chip.
