Hi guys,

first, a word of etiquette. please change the subject line when the
topic is changed.

regarding a battery freezing.

water expands as it freezes and the damage might be container damage
as the plastic expands and cannot contain the forces exerted on the
walls. leaks ensue.

internal damage may be caused as plates dislocate.
internal damage may be caused as separator walls break.

The neat thing about water is that as it freezes, it holds the stuff
in the liquid in place. the center of the battery might be at great
pressure, but also at an equilibrium of forces so that things got a
little tight in there, but not crushed.

the sides however would take the greatest movement.

Frozen water pipes do not burst from ice pressure. interesting
fact. what has to happen is that the pipe freezes in TWO places. as
the ice expands it compresses the water in-between. water being a
non-compressible fluid then exerts the pressure on the pipe wall.
Pipes burst from WATER pressure.

it is very possible that no damage occurred. it is possible that the
battery suffered catastrophic damage.

Don't toss out the baby with the bath water. test it. then you'll
KNOW !

Dave
