A shift and ser question

I would like to make a wireless set of boxes with switches at one end
and relays at the other. The one thing I'm not sure about is when
using shiftin (with a 74hc165) what is the best info to send by
serout? I ran the demo code in Stampworks and that would probably be
good enough. Maby replace the "debug home, IBIN8 switches" line with
a serout one?
