Serial or PS/2 Mouse as a Directional Sensor for BS2SX

Hi,
I am a senior in high school working on a research project for the
science fair. I am building a small bot and it needs to have the
ability to detect how far, and in what direction, it moves after
taking each step. I think a mouse would be the perfect soultion for
this, however, I do not know the best way to implement one. I have
a BS2SX and some PIC 16F84 chips, and I can get either a PS/2 or
serial mouse (which ever would work the best) I have researched the
PAK VI chip and I might have to end up taking that route, however, I
would prefer to do this a cheaper way if possible (PAK chips are $30
and as I am sure you all know these projects can start to get pretty
expensive real quick...) Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!
