So many lights

I am working on a project to control a small theater with a BS2.
Nothing really fancy other than listenting to a few pushbuttons by
the operator and then control a few things such as curtains, storbe
lights, buzzers etc. However, the biggest challenge is that I want
a dimmer pack that can controll up to 40 lights with full fading
capability. That pack must be fully controlled by the BS2,
preferrably RS232 or another format (there is DMX or MIDI which I am
not familiar with).

If anyone have some insights on this subject, it would be most
appreciated.

You want the lights individually dimmed (40 dimmer channels) or all 40 on a
single channel? What kind of lights are they, HID, incandescent, florescent?
    What wattage? What voltage?

I hope you're ready for the sticker shock too. I outfitted a hockey arena
with snazzy lighting a while back. 12x1000w spots individually dimmed, 2
colour stars, 3 shimmers, fog machine, three bubble machines, mirror ball
and its spots, extra XLR controls to a ceiling truss and a few odds and
ends. This is controlled by 2x16 channel dimming controller panels. Total
parts cost $8,000 canadian. The dimmer packs were the most expensive of the
    lot.
