I have a laptop without a serial port and have to use a USB - Serial
adapter which is a pain in the neck to use and carry around. Is
there anyway of using USB straight?

Not at this time. We would be forced to put USB adapter circuitry on our BOE
and other boards, driving the cost up substantially. The makers of those
adapters have a much bigger customer base than us and can keep costs down
lower than we'd be able to.

    Jon,

Is there a USB interface chip someone could make an interface board out of?
This sounds like a good project.

    The FT232AM from FTDI...

As used in my adapter. It is a USB to RS232 chip (at TTL levels).

Yes, I've seen a few but can't comment on how well they work. A web search
would probably turn up quite a bit of good information.

There is a cable at http://www.targus.com/product_details.asp?sku=PA088U
that could replace the normal serial cable. Like Jon said, wether it works
    with the stamp ...?
Perhaps someone has used it and can inform us.

    Regards peter

The Targus Port Replicator does NOT work with the Stamp! But The Targus part
number you specified may or may not be the same unit. There was a posting
here several weeks ago from someone who had made their own adapter using a
USB part from DonTronics. Search past postings and you should find it. The
person that developed this did a great job on this project and was very
    thorough!
