Experiment #24 & Correct 74hc165 Wiring Instructions...

Greetings,

I am trying to wire up my BS2 board to do experiment #24 of
StampWorks. The diagram supplied regarding the proper wiring of the
74hc165 chip does not indicate which pins are which. I'm trying to
find out what the proper orientation of the 74hc165 so that I can
connect it properly.

Does anyone PLEASE direct me to a wiring diagram that indicates how
to do this? I have tried EVERY possible wiring comboniation and
nothing worked.

Thanks for your patience and help on this very elementary problem.

    Folks,

Sorry to be a pest... But the saga continues:

I downloaded the 74hc165 data sheet and wired everything according to
it. Still nothing is hapenning (i.e. I'm getting all 00000000 in the
debug window no matter what I press).

Now I'm really worried. During one of my many misconfigurations, The
BS2 board got really hot and the programming window said "Basic Stamp
not Found". I disconnected everything and wired a simple LED circuit
to check to see if I killed it by accident. That LED ciruit worked
    fine.

Also I thought I may have fried the first 74hc165, so I replaced it
with a new one before I wired everything according to the data sheet.
    And Still: NOTHING!

One other thing: The RX light in the Debug window keeps flashing even
if I have no button pressed. I didn't notice that before.

Did I do any permanent damage? What on earth could I be doing wrong?
PLEASE HELP. I AM VERY STUCK AND OUT OF OPTIONS. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Go to google and type in 74HC165, you can download a PDF that gives pin
    assignments.....

On a standard DIP (dual inline package) chip, there is one end with a notch
it in -- this denotes pin 1. If you hold the chip label side up, with the
notch away from you with the pins on the left and right, pin 1 is in the
upper left corner. The pins are numbered down the left side, across and up
the right side. On a 16-pin chip, pin 16 is opposite pin 1. Here is an
    example:

    8 1
    | | | | | | | |
    | xxx {
    | | | | | | | |
    9 16

Some chips are numbered funny, but most are not -- do a search for the chip
number and look on a data sheet.

Another route is to go to
    www.findchips.com
    put in your part #
click on Digi-key (or other supplier)
then when the part comes up, go to the manufacturers web page and
search again for the part #

then download a product data sheet.

I have a list of chip manufacturers in my favorites so once I know
the mfr, I can go direct.

If I understood your question properly ...

My suggestion is to look at the spec sheet of the 74hc165... you can go to
www.onsemi.com and look for the spec...

Remember that pin 1 is always the top left pin of a DIP when looking from
    the top...

    1 - 16
    2 - 15
    3 - 14
    4 - 13
    5 - 12
    6 - 11
    7 - 10
    8 - 9

    Here's the pin layout/function -> connection

    1/serial input/parallel load -> connected to P4 of stamp
    2/clock -> connected to P0 of stamp
3/E : parallel input -> connected to D4 of switches
4/F : parallel input -> connected to D5 of switches
5/G : parallel input -> connected to D6 of switches
6/H : parallel input -> connected to D7 of switches
7/negated Qh : serial data output -> connected to P3 of stamp
    8/GND
    9/Qh : serial data output
10/Sa : serial data input -> not used
11/A : parallel input -> connected to D0 of switches
12/B : parallel input -> connected to D1 of switches
13/C : parallel input -> connected to D2 of switches
14/D : parallel input -> connected to D3 of switches
15/Clock inhibit -> connected to ground
    16/Vcc

    Hope this helps...
