looking for 555 circuit infrared object detector

Dear Stampers:
The robotic experiment 5 "object Detection using infrared" mention a circuit
made out of the 555 but it does not show the connection for such circuit. Also
said that "A 555 timer can be used for this purpose, but the 555 timer circuit
is more complex and less functional than the circuit we will use in this..."
some one can tell me where to find this circuit? and how it works
