what about sending (aprs) packets without tnc, just by dooing freqout 1200 and
freqout 2200. Is the basicstamp fast enough for this?

to send Packet data. You need to implement AX25 protocol in the Stamp, not
a trival task.
If all you need to do is send APRS data without a full blown TNC then the
TinyTrak II is what you need. The whole thing is like $24.00 and is a snap
to interface to just about any radio..

I use the Tiny Trak also. Currently they're $30 and as said, a snap
to use. The TT only sends posits, through. You can't use it like a
KPC3 to send just any text data.

like display speed, store the track, transmit some weather data etc.
The tinitrak is moreless a black box without the possibility to add features.
