Devantech SRF04 Ultrasonic Range Finder

My friend and I have been trying ( unsuccessfully ) to build a sonar circuit
with a range of about 5 feet. We have tried the sonar
project in Scott Edward's book, as well as some other we have found on the
Internet. But none of them ever reached very far.
Some of the on-line circuits involved PIC. Can some things ( such as sonar
) be done better using by using a PIC ? If so, why ?
How is the SRF04 getting a longer range ?

to know about the Devantech SRF04. I think it does have a pic;
but what makes it have a longer range than what I can build
with electronic components ( i.e. non-pic components ) ?

with? I believe the SRF's use a small amp to
hit the ultrasonics with a higher voltage(12-15V
sounds about right).

What voltage are you driving your ultrasonics
with? I believe the SRF's use a small amp to
hit the ultrasonics with a higher voltage(12-15V
